Dealing with Overwhelm.
It's a word and question I see a lot in my social and business circles of awesome creatives, entrepreneurs and doers.
We want to do everything and we want to do it all yesterday. The need to do everything at once is where the majority of overwhelm comes from therefore taking some time to back away for being everything all at once is where our tail to dealing with overwhelm starts. Today I wanted to share with you some of the very simple key steps that I share with my clients and work through with them when they're feeling the dreaded OW!
When we look at things as a whole, this is when we can't see the wood from the trees. There is so much to do and it seems like no time to do it in. When we break our goal down into specific tasks then it becomes easier to see what you can do, how you can do it and how long it will take.
Once you've broken down your goal into tasks it's time to work through where you need to start. What is the first thing you can do right now that will help you move forward. The majority of tasks you need to complete to achieve a goal will have a sequence. You can't build a website until you know what kind of business you want. You can't work out what you're going to offer until you know who your target market or audience is. Breaking down the sequence of what needs to happen will also give you permission to not do everything at once.
When you think you have an endless amount of time or even worse when you put pressure on yourself to get things done by TOMORROW then resistance, overwhelm and procrastination set in – why? because you're not being realistic. Take just the one task that you want or need to do first and realistically give yourself a set amount of time to do it in. Depending on your life and schedule it may be one day, one week or one month. Don't stress yourself out, just take things one task at a time.
If you find yourself in overwhelm, take a step back, take some time out and try and come back to it with fresh eyes. When we give our selves a little bit of distance, it allows us to clear our head and tackle the problem with new energy and clarity.
