Recently, I had an amazing conversation with Vasavi Kumar on the Brand Builders Lab Podcast, and she shared something that I've known for a long time but that needs to said again and again to remind us. If you're someone who wants to grow your business but finds yourself staying quiet about what you want – hesitating to get on camera, hit publish, or share your real thoughts – this is for you.
Vasavi shared something fascinating about the neuroscience behind speaking out loud. When you say something out loud, your brain literally lights up like a Christmas tree. You're activating your prefrontal cortex (the part that helps you regulate emotions and make decisions) and your auditory cortex (the part that processes sound).
Instead of your thoughts just spinning around in your head, you're giving your brain something new to focus on. You're interrupting the chaos loop.
Most of us live in what's called our default mode network – that's the overthinking, replaying every conversation part of your brain. But when you start saying things out loud, you pull yourself out of that mental noise and into the present moment. And that's where your nervous system starts to chill.
Here's what really got me: your brain and body are constantly talking to each other. When your voice comes in with calm, clear language like “I've got this” or “I'm safe” or “I'm good” – your nervous system takes that as evidence. Your body starts to regulate, your breath deepens, your shoulders drop.
You're literally using your own voice as medicine.
If you're struggling to show up in your business, I need to ask you something: are you focusing on yourself or on your clients?
Because here's what I see happening all the time – women tell me they can't get on camera because their hair isn't perfect, they don't have the right lighting, they haven't got their makeup done, they're not wearing the right outfit. And look, I get it. I really do.
But here's the truth bomb: if you're more concerned with what you look like than what you have to say, that's a red flag. That tells me you're trying to get attention rather than help people.
Your clients don't care what you look like. They want to feel you. They want to hear your message. They want your help.
Every single time I've gone viral or had a post do really well, I've been in a hoodie or my dad's old t-shirt. The message matters more than the outfit.
Let's talk about something practical you can start doing today: mirror work for confidence.
Vasavi used to be a TV host, and before getting on camera, she would stand in her dressing room and literally practice saying her lines to herself in the mirror. She would watch her facial expressions, notice her body language, and just hear and feel herself before she got in front of the camera.
If you're on camera regularly in your business and you're not practising mirror work, you're missing out on your competitive edge. Most people get on camera and start performing, and then they wonder why they don't sound authentic. It's because they haven't trained themselves to look at the camera as just one person.
Here's what I do now: before I post something that feels edgy or challenging, I move my body. I go for a walk. I don't look at my phone. I don't check the comments. I tell myself out loud: “You're going to be okay. If someone doesn't like what you have to say, you are going to be okay.”
That's nervous system regulation in real time.
One of the biggest shifts I've made in my business is how I talk to myself. And I'm not just talking about positive affirmations (though those can be powerful). I'm talking about real, honest, regulated self-talk.
Here are some of the things Vasavi says to herself regularly:
But here's the one that really landed for me: “You can have anything you want when you learn to simplify.”
Because that's the other piece of this visibility puzzle – we're often not showing up because we've overcomplicated everything. We've got 17 different offers, 23 freebies, and we're trying to do all the things all the time.
Want to know the real secret to being confident on camera? It's not what you think.
It's not about having perfect lighting or the right equipment or wearing the perfect outfit. It's about really liking yourself.
If you can look at yourself in the mirror and you like what you see back, are you really concerned about some mean, hateful, negative comment? When you're living your life, when you're so alive in your own life, you're not worried about what other people are thinking about you.
The ultimate question is this: do you like you? Do you like the reflection you see in the mirror? Because if you can honestly say yes, then getting visible in your business becomes so much easier.
Here's what I want you to understand: being an entrepreneur is personal development on crack. Every single insecurity you have is going to come up. And that's not a bad thing – that's an opportunity.
When you discover that you're the bottleneck in your business, you get to shift it. You get to choose who you want to be.
Do you want to be the person who's constantly in their head thinking “This isn't working, what if it's not working, I can't do this”? Or do you want to be the person who says “Let's go. Let's make this happen”?
Because you don't get what you want – you get who you're being.
When you say things out loud, you're not just being dramatic or trauma dumping. You're re-patterning your brain and signalling to your body: we're good, we're safe, we're in charge.
Let's talk about money for a second, because this is where visibility and self-worth collide.
Too many women are tying their pricing to their worth. They're saying “I need to price what I'm worth” and making it this hugely emotional thing. But here's the reality: your price point has nothing to do with your worth.
You are worthy because you exist. Your price tag doesn't equal your value.
When you price your offers, remove the emotion for a second and look at it logically:
That's it. It doesn't have to be complicated.
And if you're struggling with sales, I need to ask you: why aren't you more excited about what you're offering? If you have a programme or service that can fundamentally change people's lives, why aren't you shouting it from the rooftops?
We've got two months left of the year. Let's fucking go.
Seriously – what are you waiting for? This is not the time to slow down because “business is quiet” or “people aren't spending money”. There are people right now who have money and want to spend it on exactly what you're offering.
Here's what you can start doing today:
Get rid of offers you're not excited about. Stop putting out content about things that don't make you feel alive. You should love selling your stuff because you're eager, enthusiastic, and excited about it.
Start practising mirror work. Stand in front of the mirror and talk to yourself. Look at your facial expressions, notice your body language, hear yourself speak. This is your competitive edge.
Regulate your nervous system before, during, and after you post. Move your body. Talk to yourself kindly. Remind yourself that you're going to be okay.
Say your goals out loud. Want to end the year strong? Say it out loud. Want to hit a revenue goal? Say it out loud. Let it land in your body and then go do something about it.
Simplify everything. Go to your website right now and look at all your offers. Archive the ones you've outgrown. Archive the ones you're not excited about. Focus on going deep and wide into very few things.
You can have anything you want when you say it out loud. When you declare it. When you stop performing and start being real.
Your voice is your most powerful asset in business. You don't need to journal for three hours or meditate on a mountain. You just need to open your mouth and talk to yourself like you would to someone you love.
And if you're still struggling with visibility, remember this: it's not about you. It's about the people you're here to serve. They need to hear your message more than they need to see perfect lighting or flawless makeup.
Show up messy. Show up real. Show up now.
