Let's be real – if you're not consistently bringing in sales, staying in business becomes bloody hard. And with the market moving at warp speed right now, this conversation is more important than ever.
I've been in sales since I was 19, starting in telemarketing (yes, I was that person calling you about phone providers). Over the years, I've learned that there are four essential elements to making more sales, and they perfectly spell out the word SALE. How good is that for remembering?
Sales are the lifeblood of your business. Without them, everything else you're doing – the beautiful branding, the perfect content, the amazing products – means nothing. And here's the thing: selling is serving. When you sell, people can work with you, get the transformation they need, and achieve the outcomes they want.
So let's dive into the four things that will help you increase sales in your business.
The first question I ask my clients is simple: “What's your sales strategy?” And way too often, I get a blank stare followed by “I post content and hope it brings in clients.”
That's not a strategy, that's hope marketing.
Having a sales strategy means you know exactly what you're doing, when you're doing it, how you're doing it, and what works (and what doesn't). If you've got an online business, this includes understanding how your lead magnets, low-ticket offers, and ascension model work together to bring people into your orbit and convert them into paying clients.
Your strategy will look different depending on your business model. My sales strategy for consulting is completely different from my online course and coaching strategy. If you've got a product-based business, yours will be different again.
The key is mapping out your customer journey – how new leads come in and how the right people (not all people, but the right ones) end up buying from you.
Once you've got your strategy sorted, you need to take consistent action. I'm talking about specific professional practices you're doing every day that generate revenue.
Ask yourself: What am I doing today that's helping me connect with more customers, make an offer, or convert a sale?
This could include:
Here's something that might surprise you – I say hi to almost every new Instagram follower. People think it's weird, but here's how I see it: you do all this work to grow your following, then when people actually follow you, you ignore them? That's like someone walking into your house and you pretending they don't exist.
When I connect with new followers and understand their challenges, I often share a relevant freebie or low-priced product that could help them. And you know what? Most people appreciate it because they followed me to learn more anyway.
If you've got mindset blocks around offering what you have, that's something you need to work on. Don't do all the work to attract people and then ghost them when they engage.
You need to show up as the leader of your business. This means leading yourself to take action and implement your strategy, leading your team to execute on your vision, and positioning yourself as the authority in your community.
Think about it: if you're not leading the ship, nobody else will.
When it comes to your community, how are you positioning yourself as the go-to person in your field? What messaging are you putting out there? How are you showing up that helps people understand how they can work with you?
And with your clients – how are you being the person who helps them execute at such a high level that they get the results and transformation they're after?
Leadership isn't just about having a title. It's about consistently showing up with authority and helping others get where they want to go.
Your energy is everything. When I come across people online whose energy jumps through the screen at me, I immediately want to know more. I want to follow them, see what else they've got, and find out how I can work with them.
The energy of “I don't want to be salesy” is not an energy you want to put out there. Here's the truth: the majority of people who say they don't want to be salesy aren't salesy people anyway. They'll never come across as pushy or aggressive.
What converts people quickly is the connection, understanding, and energetic exchange. I've seen people online, binged their content, and within a day or two thought, “This person gets it. They're my kind of person. How do I buy from them?”
You need to ask yourself: Am I energetically being the kind of person that when my dream client comes across me, they think, “Who is this? I need to know more about them. What have they got?”
That's the energy we want to show up with.
