What if I told you that the key to growing your business was doing less, not more? I know that sounds backwards, but this is exactly how to simplify your business to grow it in a way that actually feels sustainable.
When you've been in business for a while, it's so easy to get overwhelmed. There's always another strategy to try, another platform to master, another thing someone's telling you that you have to do. And yeah, there genuinely is a lot to do in business.
But here's what I've learned working with clients who are building their coaching businesses, scaling their creative services, and stepping into thought leadership: the magic isn't in doing more. It's in stripping away all the clutter and focusing on three core things with absolute consistency.
These three things will completely change how your business operates and how it feels. And real talk? They're probably not what you think.
I was coaching with a client yesterday who had lists and lists on whiteboards and flip charts. She's brilliant at what she does, but she was drowning in all the ideas, all the things she thought she needed to communicate, all the strategies she'd been told to implement.
Sound familiar?
Here's the thing I've noticed: when we overwhelm ourselves with endless to-do lists and complicated strategies, what's actually happening is our brain is keeping us busy so we don't have to do the scary thing. The scary thing being: putting ourselves out there, putting our message out there, putting our offer out there.
Overwhelm is often just fear wearing a productivity mask.
So let me break down how to simplify your business to grow it. When you focus on these three things consistently and without the clutter, everything transforms.
The first thing you need is clarity. Not just any clarity – I'm talking about being able to answer these questions in a single sentence:
Who is my dream client?
Not your ideal client avatar with seventeen bullet points. One sentence. Who are they?
What is the transformation I provide them?
Clearly and simply, in a way that doesn't sound like everyone else in your space. What changes for them when they work with you?
What is my method?
This is the one most people miss. You need a way of taking your clients from A to Z that you can talk about, explain, and showcase. Because certainty sells.
Let me give you an example. Say you're a web designer who's been servicing clients and delivering websites, and now you want to shift into coaching other web designers to build their businesses. Your clarity could look like this:
“As a web designer, I know how I've attracted clients, built my business, priced my services, created revenue, and grown. I want to help other web designers who are just starting out or have less experience than me to do what I've done.”
That's clear. That's specific. That's compelling.
When I speak to someone who doesn't have a clear way of explaining exactly what we're going to do together, what they believe, what their process is – it's hard to trust them. Because when your clients are investing in themselves and investing in you, you need to give them a path.
In Brand Builders Academy, I use the Revenue Generation Roadmap. In Amplify Accelerator, I use the Scalable Impact Method. When I help clients build thought leadership, I use the Seven Pillars of Thought Leadership.
You don't have to call it a “method” or a “framework” if that feels too corporate for your brand. Call it your roadmap, your process, your system. But have one. Because when you can say “this is how it works, this is what you need to do, this is what's going to change” – that certainty and confidence makes a massive difference.
Part of this clarity is being clear on your offer. What's the one thing you're selling? Maybe it's one or two things, but keep it as simple as possible.
That's the thing you talk about all the time. Everything you do – whether you're teaching, creating connection content, doing POVs (point of views), whatever – all roads lead to your product or service.
You want to be talking to that one person about their one problem, showcasing your expertise, your knowledge, your way. No matter what kind of business you have, you need to communicate your value clearly and consistently.
When you simplify like this, you'll scale your business faster because your message becomes crystal clear.
Right, this is the big one. And I actually think this is THE biggest thing that holds people back when they're trying to build a coaching business or scale what they're doing.
I've worked with so many highly experienced experts who are incredible at what they do, and the thing that trips them up every single time? Second-guessing themselves.
Am I really that good? Can I actually do this? I'm not clear enough. There are people better than me.
Let me be straight with you: you have to step into the identity of the person who does the thing.
Your only focus needs to be your target clients – speaking to them, connecting with them, attracting them to what you're doing and creating. And constantly telling yourself and reinforcing that you ARE capable of getting your clients that transformation.
Here's the mismatch I see all the time: we think because we're learning how to become a better coach, or learning how to communicate our value in a different way, that somehow we're not worthy. That we're imposters because we haven't perfected how to communicate this new thing we're doing.
But just because you're in a learning phase doesn't mean your impact and ability to help your clients is any less.
You might be learning how to build a coaching business. You might be learning how to create better content. You might be learning how to communicate your brand strategy. But that doesn't change the fact that you can get your clients results.
Be your biggest cheerleader. Be your biggest reinforcer of positive thinking around who you are, what you do, and what you're capable of.
Ask yourself: what is the identity of the person who achieves the things I want?
Is she flying around Australia speaking on stages? Is she writing every day to become a great communicator? Is she posting several times a day so she gets the reps in to become better at creating videos?
What is the identity of the person you're wanting to step into, and how do you create that for yourself every single day?
I had a client the other day who I asked: “Have you done your speakers page?” She said no. I asked why. She said, “Not ready yet.”
There is never a time you're going to feel ready.
If you've done it before, if you know you can do it, if you want to start attracting specific opportunities into your life and business, then you have to put yourself out there as that person.
You have to say: I am a speaker. I'm a podcaster. I'm an author. Whatever it is you want to do, you've got to speak it into existence.
I ran a workshop recently called Becoming the Premium Choice, and here's what I know: if you want to be the premium choice, you have to show up as the person who delivers at that level.
If you're wanting to charge at a higher level, you've got to believe it's 100% worth it for your clients. You have to believe you can deliver something exceptional. You have to be the coach, the mentor, the creative who says, “Yes, absolutely that's what I charge, and I know I deliver on it.”
You don't have to justify that to anybody. That's your decision.
The third thing is about creating an exceptional brand experience where your clients are having aha moments, getting results, creating the thing they want.
You're building a community they want to be part of. You're building connections that matter.
When you can deliver the outcomes, more clients come to you. You get referrals. People speak about you. You're able to share the results your clients are getting.
Make this a priority in your business. Really think about:
For me, this is a big focus – having events, mastermind days, potentially flying to other states to run workshops, build the community, become visible, share what I'm passionate about, and connect with more people.
Can I just say? Community building can be really hard. I'm not going to pretend it's easy.
I've had communities with thousands and thousands of people. I've shut down Facebook groups at that level. I've got my client community now, and we're all so used to being online that sometimes it's hard to get engagement.
But we need to think about how we're creating experiences that people want to be a part of, that people come back to.
Here's what I'm seeing: people are craving analog experiences. They want to get off their phones. They want in-person connections. Even the data shows this – I shared the Metrical social media report with clients recently, and Facebook was up 54%, YouTube growing 76%, and Instagram was down.
So ask yourself: where is my audience communing? What brand experience do I want to create?
When somebody's in my world, what's the experience I want them to have? How do I want them to feel? What do I want them to know? Why do they keep coming back?
Community strategy is something you've really got to learn and work on. Figure out what works for your particular audience, their needs, their desires.
I'm going to be asking my community: what do you want more of in the new year? What do you need more help with? What conversations do you want to be having? So we can craft that for them with real intent.
Because people might come for the content, but they stay for the community.
So there you have it – how to simplify your business to grow it comes down to three things:
1. Clarity – Get really clear on your who, what, why, when, how. Know your method. Simplify your offer.
2. Confidence and Identity – Work on stepping into who you need to be. There is no strategy that works without you showing up as the person who can execute it really well.
3. Community and Client Delivery – Think about how you're building connection around you. That's what keeps clients coming back.
These aren't sexy. They're not the latest growth hack or viral strategy. But they work. And when you focus on them consistently, without all the noise and clutter, everything changes.
If you're ready to strip away the overwhelm and actually simplify your business in a way that creates real growth, start here. Pick one of these three things and commit to mastering it this week. Then the next. Then the next.
That's how you build something that lasts.
