This week on the podcast, I’m talking about finding your voice. Sometimes people really want to be a speaker, but their question to me is, “Suz, I just don't know what to speak about!” Now, when we go through the Bold Speakers Workbook, one of the first things that I ask is, “What do you want to be known for? What are you really passionate about? And what is the message that you really want to take to market and have people connect with? What is it that you want to stand for?”
It may take a little bit of time for you to really evolve into what it is that is going to be your powerful message, and so that patience and that work that you will need to do is just part of the journey – but that that journey will really help you to discover and define what it is that you uniquely want to talk about and be known for.
So right now, if you're saying, “I just don't know exactly what I want to talk about.” Then I would really encourage you to take some time and some space to sit down and write about the things that you care about, write about what you're seeing in the world and what it is that you want to challenge. What is it that you have strong feelings against? What is it that you believe? What is it that you want to show up and talk about? And I think that when you sit down and you write some of those thoughts down, you'll start to see the patterns, you'll start to see the messages. And if there's one particular message that really stands out for you or to you, then I want you to really start to build that out.
So for example, for me, I just knew that I could see women who had such great talent and I knew that they had something special to offer and give and share, and they just weren't doing it. And so whilst my background is business and brand strategy and very functional and strategic, that was something I was super passionate about. And so the more that I talked about it, the more that I delved into it, the more that I spoke to my clients and really understood what their challenges were, the more my message grew and the stronger it got as well. And so I think that when you decide to really dive into what the challenges are for your audience and what your life experiences have been as well, when it comes to that particular topic, then you can really start to put meat on the bones, so to speak, and really start to add your stories and add your thoughts and add your observations and your research. And once you start to layer your message, it will start to form.
So that's really stage one of working out what you want to speak about, yeah, is to decide what am I passionate about and what do I see in the world that I really want to tackle and be part of the conversation? What do I believe? What are the conversations I'm having with others? What am I observing when it comes to this particular topic? What are others saying about it? And that's the first stage, is really just taking the time and giving yourself the space to be able to really dive deeper into that.
The second stage of finding your voice and honing your message is really about putting it out there and starting to share it openly. So whether that be in blog posts, videos, social media, talking and speaking at events or online summits, sharing it in webinars. Wherever you decide to share that message, the more you share it, the more feedback you will get about what really resonates with people, what people are really connecting to when it comes to your message and your story so that you can then hone it and continue to evolve it so that you can share it and strengthen that message as well.
The other thing that you'll find is that you may start in one place, but the more that you share your message and the more that you speak to people and the more that you see who's being attracted to you and what you talk about, that may end up going in a different direction. And it's okay for that to happen as well because I really think that finding your message and finding your voice as a speaker, and also as a business owner and as a human is really about the evolution of that message and your ability to really follow the trail that message takes you on. Where you start may not be where you finish. What you thought was going to be important, may not be as important in the end. But being okay with taking that first step and being okay with not 100% knowing exactly what that finished, completed, perfect message is, because it'll never be perfect, is the first step to really finding your voice.
So the first thing I want you to do is give yourself the time and space, and also the permission for it not to be perfect and the permission for it to start where it's starting right now and knowing that it will take you on a journey as well, which I think is the exciting thing. When you look to find your voice, when you look to find that message that you want to be known for, it will take you on your own journey and I think that that's something that you should get excited about. So spend some time, write it down, think about what it is you really want to say, and let's get started.
