You have decades of experience. You know your stuff inside out. You could fill books, stand on stages, run an entire lecture series on what you know. And yet, showing up and sharing something in a 60-second video or a 10-minute clip feels absolutely terrifying.
I see this every single week with my clients. And I want to talk about why that is, and more importantly, what you can do about it. Because the market is moving fast, and the longer you stay stuck, the longer it takes to build the personal brand and the business you actually want.
Here are the three shifts I want you to make. Like, yesterday.
This week, a client told me she just “hadn’t had the chance” to create content. And I get it. We hear that one all the time. But here’s the truth: you’re never going to have the chance. You have to make the chance.
There are two things happening when we don’t show up. First, there’s no strategy. And second, even when there is a strategy, there’s no belief behind it.
Strategy without belief means you’ll write the plan, you’ll know what you’re supposed to do, and then you still won’t do it, because somewhere inside you’re asking, what’s the point? And when you don’t believe it’s going to work, your behaviour won’t follow.
I learned this the hard way early in my coaching career. I came from a consulting background. Strategy was my thing. But I kept watching people not execute, and it drove me crazy. That’s actually why I became a certified mindset coach. Because strategy and mindset have to go hand in hand.
What I want you to do is treat your content creation the way you treat brushing your teeth. You don’t wake up and think, “Hmm, do I feel like brushing my teeth today?” You just do it. Because you know it’s good for you. Make content creation the same. It’s not about how you feel. It’s a professional practice.
One of my clients asked me this week: “Suz, how do I share stories about myself without it feeling like I’m screaming look at me?”
And I asked her: “When you watch other people share their stories, do you think that about them?” She said no. So why would your audience think it about you?
Storytelling is how connection happens. And if you’re Gen X like me, this isn’t something we were raised doing. But the market has changed, and if we want to stay relevant, we have to get comfortable with it.
I use a simple framework called HALO:
There are so many stories you can tell. Your brand story. Pivotal moments in your career. Client wins. Things you’ve read, heard, or experienced. Every single one of them is an opportunity to connect, teach, and build trust.
Your story isn’t embarrassing. It’s the bridge between you and your audience.
I was talking to a seven-figure agency owner recently who knows an enormous amount. But she was really struggling to create content because everything she does felt too complex to break down into a post or a video.
Here’s what I told her, and what I’m telling you: the ability to make complex things simple is one of the most powerful skills you can develop as an expert.
There’s a well-known line that says if you can’t explain something simply, you don’t understand it well enough. Which is confronting, but it’s also a massive opportunity.
When you can take what you know and make it easy for people to grasp, you become the person who makes the hard stuff feel doable. And that’s when people keep coming back. That’s when they become clients.
Think of your content like breadcrumbs in Hansel and Gretel. Each piece leads someone a little further into your world, building understanding and trust, until eventually they’re like, “Yes. This is the person I need to work with.”
My favourite test? Explain what you do to a 13-year-old. If you can do that, you can communicate it online.
So if you’re a 40+ business owner who wants to get serious about building your personal brand, here’s what I need you to do:
