Overcoming resistance is one of those nagging things that pops it's ugly head up more often than many of us would like. It's part of our body's chemistry and has kept us safe for many years. What it also does is that it make us fearful of things, that in fact, we don't need protection from. Many times it prevents us from actually reaching our potential and living our dreams.
Not too long ago I wrote about Powering through your Resistance. Knowing that resistance is part of the process of being creative and building something new or different can help us to overcome our fears and get on with the job at hand.
Two factors that I've found really helpful to overcoming resistance are:
When we know for a fact that we have the ability to learn anything that we need to know, and we know that it's available to us in hundreds of forms then the voice that tells us “you don't know how to do that” becomes smaller. I may not know how to do that right now but give me a couple of week or month or a year and I know that I work out how to do that. I know that I can connect with the right people or I can teach myself. When you think about what you're an expert in now in your life and that at some stage, probably not that long ago you didn't have the know you have now, then think about if you really set your mind to learning something new how quickly you could figure it out or learn through a course how build your skills and knowledge.
Resistance often comes when we don't know how to do something. Acknowledge your lack of knowledge and get on with the learning!
and the second is
Many times we wait for things to be perfect. I can't put it out there because it doesn't look right, it's not totally finished, I'm scared, no one will be interested etc. By doing things slowing and a step at a time it means that what you're putting out there isn't this huge overwhelming thing. If you build up your resilience slowly and bit by bit, piece by piece then it won't feel like such a barrier. Getting rid of your perfectionism can help you take strides in your career, business and life.
